YouTube Appoints Gunjan Soni as New Country Managing Director for India

In a strategic move aimed at accelerating its growth and reinforcing its commitment to India's rapidly evolving digital landscape, YouTube has announced the appointment of Gunjan Soni as the new Country Managing Director for India. This decision comes after Ishan Chatterjee's exit last year, as the company sought new leadership to navigate the unique challenges and opportunities within the Indian market.

With more than two decades of leadership experience, Soni brings a wealth of knowledge in business, technology, marketing, and e-commerce. Her proven track record at leading global and Indian firms positions her well to take on this critical role and guide YouTube through its next phase of growth in India, which has become a crucial market for the platform.

A Wealth of Experience

Before joining YouTube, Soni served as the Group CEO at ZALORA, the Southeast Asian online fashion retailer, where she played a pivotal role in expanding the company’s product offerings and innovating its business model. Her tenure at ZALORA, where she led the company for six years, was marked by key initiatives in personalizing user experience and creating successful loyalty programs.

Soni’s extensive experience in the Indian media and e-commerce sectors further strengthens her leadership credentials. She has previously held senior roles as EVP at Star India and CMO at Myntra, two of the country’s largest media and retail platforms. Additionally, her work as a Partner at McKinsey & Company, specializing in consumer and marketing strategy, has given her a deep understanding of both global and Indian markets.

Beyond her corporate experience, Soni serves on the board of CBRE Group, a Fortune 500 company, bringing a global perspective to her new role at YouTube.

Leading YouTube’s Growth in India

As the Country Managing Director for India, Soni’s primary focus will be to drive YouTube’s growth in one of its most important and dynamic markets. India is home to a vibrant and rapidly growing creator economy, and YouTube has been at the forefront of enabling this wave of content creators, entrepreneurs, and digital influencers. The platform has not only transformed entertainment but also become a critical channel for education, commerce, and engagement.

Gautam Anand, Vice President of YouTube APAC, expressed his enthusiasm for Soni’s appointment, highlighting her deep understanding of the creator economy and video commerce. "Gunjan’s leadership will enable us to accelerate creator growth, unlock new opportunities, and engage users in meaningful ways," Anand said in a statement. He emphasized that Soni’s strategic insight and passion for innovation would help YouTube continue to thrive in India’s ever-changing digital ecosystem.

The Vision for India's Digital Future

In her new role, Soni is tasked with further strengthening YouTube’s presence in India, where the platform continues to witness explosive growth. She has expressed excitement about the role, calling YouTube's impact on India’s creator economy "truly inspiring." The platform’s ability to connect communities, foster creativity, and empower millions of content creators across the country aligns with her vision for the future.

Soni's leadership is expected to focus not only on enhancing YouTube’s platform offerings but also on driving deeper engagement with users and content creators. Given her strong background in e-commerce and digital marketing, she is well-positioned to explore new avenues for revenue generation, including video commerce, which has seen significant growth in India. YouTube’s existing collaborations with Indian brands, creators, and advertisers are likely to expand under her guidance, further embedding the platform into the digital fabric of India.

Looking Ahead

With Soni at the helm, YouTube’s growth trajectory in India is set to enter an exciting new phase. The country’s digital economy is poised for unprecedented expansion, driven by the increasing adoption of smartphones, the internet, and digital content consumption. As the platform continues to play a central role in shaping India's digital future, Soni’s leadership will be key in navigating the challenges and seizing the opportunities that lie ahead.

For YouTube, India represents both a strategic and high-growth market. The appointment of Gunjan Soni signifies the company’s long-term commitment to the region and reflects its belief in the vast potential of India’s creator-driven ecosystem. As digital trends evolve and video consumption continues to surge, YouTube is well-positioned to remain at the forefront of India’s digital revolution, under Soni’s experienced leadership.
