HP Accelerates India Strategy with AI-Driven Laptops and Local Manufacturing Push

By Shilpa Reddy , 26 April 2025

HP Inc. has set a bold course for India’s tech manufacturing landscape, announcing plans to more than double local production of its personal computers by 2031. As part of this strategic pivot, the company aims to manufacture 13% of all PCs sold in India locally by the end of 2025, with a target of reaching one-third by 2031. Simultaneously, HP unveiled a new lineup of artificial intelligence-enabled laptops, designed to meet rising demand for next-generation computing. These moves highlight HP’s dual focus on scaling indigenous production and capitalizing on the rapidly growing AI-driven PC market.

HP’s Long-Term Commitment to 'Make in India'

At the heart of HP’s India roadmap lies a strong commitment to local manufacturing. The company has announced that by the end of 2025, approximately 13% of its personal computers sold in India will be Made in India, a figure it aims to scale to 33% by 2031. This ambitious target is a part of HP’s broader plan to align with India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) initiative.

To support this effort, HP has partnered with electronics manufacturing services firms Dixon Technologies and VVDN Technologies, both of which are instrumental in enabling domestic production of HP laptops. These alliances are expected to reduce dependency on imports, enhance supply chain efficiency, and create local employment opportunities.

Market Leadership and Performance Metrics

HP currently holds a commanding position in India’s personal computing segment, maintaining a 30.1% market share in 2024, according to IDC estimates. This leadership extended into the December quarter with a 30% share, despite modest declines in both annual and quarterly shipments—down by approximately 1% year-on-year and 1.8% quarter-on-quarter.

This performance reflects HP’s strong brand recall, broad product portfolio, and deep distribution network across both urban and rural markets. The company’s ability to maintain dominance amidst fluctuating demand highlights its adaptability in a competitive and evolving sector.

Riding the AI Wave: Launch of Next-Gen Laptops

HP is also betting big on AI integration in personal computing. The company recently launched nine AI-powered laptop models across its EliteBook, ProBook, and OmniBook series. These devices are equipped with Intel Core Ultra 200 V-series, AMD Ryzen AI 300 series, and Qualcomm Snapdragon X (Elite and Plus) chipsets—each featuring dedicated neural processing units (NPUs) capable of executing 40–55 trillion operations per second.

This new lineup is engineered to support high-performance computing needs across professional, academic, and creative workloads. The product range starts from Rs. 78,999 for the 16-inch HP OmniBook 5, extending up to Rs. 1.86 lakh for the 14-inch HP OmniBook Ultra, positioning them competitively in the premium segment.

AI Adoption: India’s Emerging Opportunity

HP sees India as a key growth market for AI-enabled PCs. While adoption is still nascent domestically, the global trend signals significant upside potential. According to Vineet Gehani, Senior Director for Personal Systems at HP India, 15–20% of all PCs sold globally in 2025 will be AI PCs, a figure expected to rise beyond 50% within the next two to three years.

Gehani believes that India will mirror this trajectory, driven by increasing enterprise digitalization, tech-savvy consumers, and growing awareness around AI’s role in personal productivity. As such, HP’s product innovation is well-aligned with future consumer demands and industry trends.

Strategic Implications and Outlook

HP’s strategy of scaling local production while introducing AI-powered hardware positions it well to tap into India’s dual aspirations: becoming a global manufacturing hub and an early adopter of cutting-edge technologies. As the company embeds AI deeper into its product DNA, it will not only bolster its competitive edge but also play a role in shaping India’s broader digital transformation narrative.

In the long term, HP’s trajectory in India will be shaped by its ability to localize efficiently, maintain technological leadership, and anticipate the nuanced needs of one of the world’s most dynamic markets.
