Spanning 217 square kilometers along the Krishna River, the city is designed to meet all its electricity needs through sustainable sources, including solar, wind, and hydropower. With a projected 2,700 megawatt (MW) energy capacity, Amaravati aims to serve as a global model of urban sustainability, supporting India’s broader clean energy goals. The city’s development will emphasize renewable energy infrastructure, eco-friendly transport systems, and energy-efficient buildings, setting a global standard for future cities.

Amaravati, the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, is being constructed with a groundbreaking commitment to environmental sustainability. The city, slated to be powered entirely by renewable energy, aims to fulfill all its electricity needs from clean sources, such as solar, wind, and hydropower. The ambitious goal is to harness 2,700 MW of renewable energy, positioning Amaravati as not just a political and economic center, but as a global leader in green urban development. The foundation for this visionary project is set to be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming weeks. Spanning 217 square kilometers on the banks of the Krishna River, Amaravati will emerge as the centerpiece of the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region—a vast area of 8,352 square kilometers—and a prime example of a sustainable, future-ready city.

Renewable Energy Infrastructure: The Backbone of Amaravati

Central to Amaravati’s green vision is its energy infrastructure. By 2050, the city is projected to need 2,700 MW of power, with at least 30% of it sourced from renewable energy. A key aspect of this plan is solar power generation. In line with this, all government housing projects will feature rooftop solar systems, with at least one-third of the rooftop area covered by solar panels. These mandatory solar installations will ensure that buildings not only reduce their dependence on external power grids but also contribute to the city’s clean energy goals.

In addition to the rooftop solar panels, district cooling systems are being integrated into the city’s infrastructure to address the high energy demand for cooling, a significant concern in a region known for extreme temperatures. The partnership with Tabreed, which includes the installation of 20,000 refrigeration tonnes (RT) of cooling capacity, is expected to cut energy demand for cooling by 50%, thereby reducing both power consumption and carbon emissions.

Sustainable Transportation and Green Building Standards

Amaravati’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond energy generation to its transportation infrastructure. Public transit, including the proposed Amaravati Metro and an electric bus fleet, will operate entirely on renewable energy. This will significantly reduce the city’s carbon footprint while providing efficient, eco-friendly options for residents and visitors alike.

Moreover, the city will feature electric vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout public and government spaces, making it easier for residents to embrace electric transportation. The integration of renewable energy sources into these systems ensures that the city’s entire transport network remains aligned with its environmental goals.

Building construction in Amaravati will also adhere to green building standards, ensuring energy efficiency and the minimization of resource consumption. Notably, all government and commercial buildings will be mandated to install solar panels and adopt net metering systems to optimize energy use and further reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

In preparation for its eventual completion, Amaravati has already begun incorporating sustainable energy solutions. 415 kW of rooftop solar panels have been installed across a variety of public facilities, including Anganwadis, e-health centers, public schools, and a multi-faith funeral center. These early initiatives highlight the city’s commitment to embedding renewable energy within its urban fabric from the very beginning of its development.

Additionally, public spaces such as parks, walkways, and roadside bus depots are being explored for their potential to host solar panels, further enhancing the city’s clean energy capabilities and reducing its overall carbon footprint.

The construction of Amaravati represents more than just a new capital for Andhra Pradesh; it is a bold, global statement about what’s possible when modern urban planning embraces sustainability at every level.
