German automotive technology company ZF Group has marked its entry into the Indian railway sector by securing its first gearbox manufacturing order. The company will locally assemble a new single-stage spur gear drive at its Coimbatore facility, tailored for the Vande Bharat Express trains. This move aligns with India's "Make in India" initiative and underscores ZF's commitment to supporting the nation's growing rail infrastructure.

Strategic Entry into Indian Railways

ZF Group's decision to enter the Indian railway sector is a significant milestone, reflecting the company's strategic focus on expanding its footprint in emerging markets. The Vande Bharat Express, introduced in 2019, is India's semi-high-speed indigenous trainset designed to operate at speeds ranging from 70 to 170 km/h. The customized gearbox is engineered to handle high acceleration rates, ensuring improved performance and passenger comfort.

Local Manufacturing at Coimbatore Facility

The gearbox will be assembled at ZF's state-of-the-art facility in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. This facility, inaugurated in June 2025 with an investment of €20 million (approximately ₹192 crore), spans 10,000 square meters and serves as a hub for manufacturing advanced driveline and transmission systems. The Coimbatore plant is part of ZF's broader "Make in India for India and the World" strategy, aiming to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities while catering to both domestic and global markets.

Commitment to Sustainable Mobility

Akash Passey, President of ZF Group India, emphasized that securing the first order for a local railway gearbox validates the company's engineering and manufacturing capabilities. He highlighted ZF's commitment to advancing India's mobility transformation by delivering sustainable, reliable, and future-ready solutions for the railway sector from within India.

Broader Impact on Indian Rail Infrastructure

The collaboration between ZF Group and Indian Railways signifies a step towards enhancing the nation's rail infrastructure with advanced technology solutions. By localizing production, ZF not only supports the "Make in India" initiative but also contributes to the development of a robust supply chain for the railway sector. This partnership is expected to lead to improved operational efficiency and passenger experience in India's semi-high-speed trains.
